What is the difference between biological and non-biological washing powders? biological detergent contains enzymes which aid the removal of stains. They do this by reacting with the water through hydrolysis. These enzymes will often work at lower temperatures than non-biological detergent which does not contain enzymes. In terms of the environmental impact the enzymes in biological detergent will often take longer to breakdown in the environment than using a non-bio without the enzymes. You will often have to use a higher heat setting with a non-biological powder to get the same result however, although developments in non-bio's mean they can now work at lower temperatures than previously.
